TELEVISION NEWS
From a new study: Each additional hour of TV that toddlers watch per week translates into poorer classroom behavior, lower math scores, less physical activity, and more snacking at age 10, according to a new study in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Bones star David Boreanaz confesses to cheating on his wife of nearly nine years in the new issue of People. Classy.

Chicago's legendary horror host Svengoolie (Rich Koz, the second Svengoolie) recently presented an HD presentation of Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' on WCIU, The U. Guess what? According to Nielsen Media Research, Svengoolie captured more viewers than any other broadcast TV station in the market. Now that is creative programming, these guys are obviously tapping into a hungry market. It seems to me there's an audience for programming with a local flavor, not just in Chicago but all over. Look at the crowds that Julian West attracted to his Museum of TV tribute to the local kid show hosts in the Twin Cities. Svengoolie will host an encore presentation on Saturday, May 15 at his regularly scheduled time, 9 PM.

Coming to the History Channel: Stan Lee's Superhumans will locate people who have remarkable abilities due to genetic abnormalities. The world's most flexible man Daniel Browning Smith will co-host the series with Stan the Man.

Sopranos creator David Chase is looking for unknown actors for his next project, which he will direct. An open casting call in New York City will be held on May 8 for three guys between the ages of 18 and 25 to play members of a rock band in a 1960's coming-of-age drama.

Justified has already been picked up for a second season on FX, it's drawing 3.4 million viewers.

OLD & NEWS
For those of you in Chicago this is worth checking out, the Sue Anne episodes are the funniest: I've got some info for you about one of our broadcast events on Me-TV. Since Betty White's Saturday Night Live appearance next Saturday is so topical and she was born in the area (Oak Park), not to mention America's current 'It' girl, I wanted to make sure you knew we were having a two week celebration: Betty White Nights! We'll be airing Sue Ann Nivens episodes of 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' at 7 PM beginning Monday - hosted by Melissa Forman.

It was a TV show then a movie. Now Aqua Teen Hunger Force has taken to the stage for a live show that's out on a cross-country tour.

Check out this interesting article on the original Village People. What a messed up bunch of guys they were! The first two paragraphs:

The fractious personal and professional relationships of the Village People began in the 1970s with original lead singer Victor Willis. As recently as 2006, Willis pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a Daly City arrest for possessing cocaine and carrying a loaded firearm. Mark Lee, who replaced the group's original construction worker in 1982, was aware of the history of problems.

"Victor Willis had a major drug problem, and left the group just before the film Can't Stop the Music was made. At the time, he was married to Phylicia Rashad, who would later play Bill Cosby's wife on television. In the 1970s, she would actually go on tour with the Village People. I remember being told of one instance in which Willis was high and pointing a gun at his wife in the middle of a casino hallway. I think that was the last straw."

COUNTRY FRIED YOU TUBE
Let's listen to some good old country music, shall we?

When I was growing up in the South the weekends were crowded with country music shows on TV, I did my best to avoid them. Now I enjoy Bluegrass and the old country tunes and would love to watch Billy Walker Country Carnival, The Arthur Smith Show, Porter Wagner Show, or any other of those corny shows. You may remember Flatt & Scruggs, if for nothing else than penning and performing The Beverly Hillbillies theme song. Here they are doing 'Ruby,' a big Bluegrass hit, on the Martha White Show. The 7 year old kid playing Mandolin and singing with them is a young Ricky Skaggs.

Like I said I hated those country shows then, but the commercial jingle for Martha White grabbed me for some reason. Well, what's not to like - it was performed by Flatt & Scruggs. "Martha White self-risin' flower with Hot Rise Plus..." This is one of the Martha White commercials from the Flatt & Scruggs show.

Dolly Parton and Porter Wagner were the Sonny & Cher of the country music world before Sonny & Cher conquered TV. Wagner & Parton had a rocky relationship, to say the least, but they had a definite chemistry. Here they are performing a spiritual number written by Dolly, 'Daddy Was An Old Time Preacher Man.' An old-time gospel number was a regular feature of these shows.

Here's Dolly & Porter again with 'The Last Thing on My Mind', you can see why their show was so popular in syndication in 1968, Dolly just bubbles up from inside. Porter Wagoner gave Dolly her start as a performer with regional exposure on his TV program in 1967. She stayed with The Porter Wagoner Show and continued recording duets until she had the massive solo hit 'Jolene' in 1974 and left Porter Wagoner behind. Dolly launched a solo show in 1976 that lasted one season.

NEWS TO ME
Here's a wonderful interview with Chicago broadcast legend Bill Jackson (B.J. and Dirty Dragon Show, Gigglesnort Hotel) where he talks at length about the current state of local TV production and why the local kiddie shows evaporated.

We'll have to wait at least until December of 2012 to see The Hobbit.

The group A-Ha ('Take on Me') is breaking up after almost three decades which shows you how long one hit single can sustain a career.

Headline of the day: Sandra Bullock Files Divorce, Adopts Son. Adopts a child? Isn't that what she did in the first place that caused her this embarrassment?

This show depresses me but money is money - Wheel of Fortune is giving away a million bucks in May to viewers of the show. The sweepstakes runs for 20 days, giving Wheel Watchers Club members 40 chances to win $25,000 instantly, equaling $1,000,000. To be eligible to win, viewers will want to become registered members of the Wheel Watchers Club no later than May 9, 2010. Registration is free and easy at www.wheeloffortune.com. Sure beats Dialing For Dollars!
