THE THREE STOOGES
The Three Stooges enjoyed a whole new life once the theatrical shorts were sold into TV syndication in the 1950s. Moe & Larry were still alive and (occasionally) making movies but their explosive presence on television created a new generation of fans. Larry Fine's health problems prevented him from making many TV appearances but Moe Howard could be seen well into the 1970s on afternoon talk shows and the odd local kiddie show.

Moe & Larry, joined by Joe Besser, created a new series of live action / animated shorts in 1964. Here's Moe on The Mike Douglas Show talking about his early days in vaudeville and his career as the head Stooge.

Larry Fine of the Three Stooges granted a rare video interview in 1973 when he was residing at the Motion Picture Country Home. Embedding is disabled but it's worth a look.

This is from one of my favorite Three Stooges bit, which was based on an old vaudeville routine of unknown origin - 'Slowly, I Turned.'

YOU NEVER KNOW
Gosh, it's been 20 years since the last Brady Bunch TV series reinvention, remember
The Bradys, an hour-long drama that aired on CBS for four weeks? Isn't it time to try again?

Funny thing that Brady bunch. I had a friend who worked with Florence Henderson when she was doing the Wesson Oil commercials in the 1980s. She told me that Florence was talking about the Brady years one day and it was VERY revealing. I can't really tell you what she said, it's that shocking. The story about Barry Williams dating Florence is probably bogus - the REAL story would knock your socks off!

television blog / Robert Reed of the Brady Bunch & MannixIn the early-1990s I was at a party in Hollywood talking with the most amazing looking guy. He was a male prostitute, not a street level guy but a call boy, I guess you would call it. He told me one of his clients was a real freak, with a torture dungeon set up in his home. He told me the guy was a famous TV star but refused to reveal his name.

I said, "Give me a hint." He said, "the guy starred in two TV series at the same time in the 1970s, one a drama and one a comedy." I thought of Robert Reed immediately who was on The Brady Bunch and Mannix at the same time. His reaction didn't give anything away (he was a prostitute, after all) but I can't think of any other TV stars that fit that description, can you?

IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD
Talk about government mandated health care, our nation's leaders decided almost forty years ago that tobacco and TV don't mix. After January 1, 1971 there were no more cigarette ads to be
seen on the small screen. The last ad broadcast was for Virginia Slims but here's another example of the last of the breed.

TV cigarette commercial 1970 / TV Blog"You can take Salem out of the country but you can't take the country out of Salem" was a very effective and catchy jingle, this was the last TV campaign for this venerable brand before the ban on tobacco advertising took effect.

TAX DAY
It's coming, and too quickly for me. If you're like myself and are disgusted after doing your taxes, I always end up owing, take 10 minutes and laugh about the whole ordeal with The Honeymooners
from March, 1953.

I can't explain it, but one of my favorite classic TV shows is Here's Lucy. I suppose it's because it's so silly and devoid of any pretense of reality. In this clip from the series, Lucy meets Charles Nelson Reilly at the customer service desk of a department store. Notice that what was considered slightly absurd in 1971 is now commonplace.

Hear the lady laughing over the rest of the audience? That was Lucy's mom and the guy you hear laughing loudly was Lucy's husband Gary Morton.
